Summary of Position:

To supervise the production process of a department that fabricates dental prosthetic appliances and to fabricate dental prosthetic appliances from customer prescription forms and repair such devices per customer orders. Dental prosthetic appliances consist primarily of full and partial dentures, crowns, bridges, full and partial cast partials, and assorted orthodontia devices (splints, veneers, etc.).

Responsibilities:

  • Distribute customer cases to appropriate technicians based on technician’s knowledge, experience and availability
  • Coordinate the workflow of customer cases within the department from initial setup to completion of appliance
  • Supervise technicians in the fabrication of dental appliances
  • Evaluate customer cases and production schedules to ensure timely completion of work
  • Inspect customer cases at key stages in the fabrication process to ensure specifications and standards are met
  • Fabricate, alter or repair dental appliances according to customer’s instructions on the prescription form when need arises in the department. 
  • Organize and implement training programs for new and existing technicians
  • Responsible for evaluating performance of technicians
  • Handle customer complaints, communicate case alternatives with customers, take responsibility for specific appliance sales and may be required to demonstrate appliances/techniques in dental offices and at meetings
  • Ensure that proper maintenance and safety procedures are followed by technicians
  • Maintain a neat and clean department workspace to prevent workplace damage and minimize potential for injury

Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Minimum two to three years specialized training in dental technology
  • Certified Dental Technician (CDT) certification required but may be waived with sufficient dental knowledge and experience
  • Minimum five to seven years fabricating dental prosthetic appliances
  • Must exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance when managing the department, supervising employees and working with customers
  • Requires manual dexterity, strong attention to detail and good spatial and visual perception
  • Requires flexibility and adaptability to meet laboratory demands
  • Must be able to motivate and direct the work of other technicians, create an environment of teamwork and be willing to answer questions
