Summary of Position:

A Department Manager will supervise the production processes of only one department

The Department Manager will fabricate only the type of dental appliance in the department he or she supervises. Furthermore, the fabrication process for each appliance differs and has many steps, and a Department Manager will generally have knowledge in all of the steps in that process and will perform the steps necessary based on need. A Department Manager will not spend more than 50% of time working on the fabrication of appliances.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Distribute customer cases to appropriate technicians based on technician’s knowledge, experience, and availability
  • Coordinate the workflow of customer cases within the department from initial setup to completion of the appliance
  • Supervise technicians in the fabrication of dental appliances
  • Evaluate customer cases and production schedules to ensure timely completion of work
  • Inspect customer cases at key stages in the fabrication process to ensure specifications and standards are met
  • Fabricate, alter or repair dental appliances according to customer’s instructions on the prescription form when the need arises in the department. Fabrication processes vary based on the appliance, but include the following:
  • Organize and implement training programs for new and existing technicians
  • Responsible for evaluating the performance of technicians
  • Handle customer complaints, communicate case alternatives with customers, take responsibility for specific appliance sales and may be required to demonstrate appliances/techniques in dental offices and at meetings
  • Ensure that proper maintenance and safety procedures are followed by technicians
  • Maintain a neat and clean department workspace to prevent workplace damage and minimize the potential for injury

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Minimum two to three years specialized training in dental technology
  • Certified Dental Technician (CDT) certification required but may be waived with sufficient dental knowledge and experience
  • Minimum five to seven years fabricating dental prosthetic appliances
  • Must exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance when managing the department, supervising employees and working with customers
  • Requires manual dexterity, strong attention to detail and good spatial and visual perception
  • Ability to lift up to ten pounds and occasionally heavier
  • Requires flexibility and adaptability to meet laboratory demands
  • Ability to communicate with lab personnel and customers regarding technical ramifications and appliance designs
  • Must be able to motivate and direct the work of other technicians, create an environment of teamwork and be willing to answer questions
  • Ability to work with limited supervision
